The Retreat, near Ideford
This new 6-bedroom, 9-bathroom dwelling in rural Devon won planning permission for a design tailored to the client’s brief. The scheme creates a formal sun-trap courtyard within the substantial acreage of the site, around which the main living spaces are located. These include open plan living areas, a secluded snug, a billiard room and ground floor annexe suite. Every element of the design was created to the requirements of the clients, from the 7m bi-fold lounge doors to the bespoke bath with its expansive views over the surrounding fields. The exterior uses a specially selected mix of stone, render and boarding to create an interested series of facades; all of which have a different character dependent upon their use, their aspect, and their place within the overall composition. At key points curved wall elements are introduced to create a welcoming entrance perspective. The effect is a building which appears as a modern interpretation of the traditional manor house. The building work was successfully completed in 2013.
